The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore celebrated Deepavali, the “Festival of Lights”, at Sri Senpaga Vinayagar temple on 09th November 2024, attended by over 150 members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Singapore.
The event began with blessings from Sri Sabesan Kurukkal, the Chief Priest of the Temple, followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp by the Guest of Honour, Hon. Neil Parekh, Member of Parliament of Singapore, alongside the representatives of Sri Lankan associations.
Welcoming the guests, High Commissioner Senarath Dissanayake highlighted on the spiritual significance of Deepavali and reminded that Deepavali holds a timeless and universal message very much relevant to the world which is fragmented with conflict. Referring to the venue of the event, Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple which is a Sri Lankan heritage temple built in 1850s, the High Commissioner underscored that the celebrations at the temple reflect the shared cultural values and strong people-to-people linkage between the two countries.
Addressing the celebrations the Guest of Honour Hon. Neil Parekh expressed his pleasure in joining the Deepavali celebrations organized by the High Commission of Sri Lanka and noted that these celebrations would further foster cultural ties between Sri Lanka and Singapore. Hon. Parekh, who also serves as Chairman of the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the Chamber’s interest to further promote business relations between Sri Lanka and Singapore.
The gathering was treated to a cultural performance which captivated the audience with its vivid expression and rhythm that beautifully encapsulated the spirit of Deepavali and the cultural richness of the community.
The evening concluded with a traditional vegetarian dinner, in keeping with the spirit of Deepavali, enjoyed by all guests.
