On 3rd June 2015, the Sri Lanka High Commission, Singapore celebrated Poson, the festival celebrated in Sri Lanka on the full moon poya day of June with much devotion and piety. Poson, held on the full moon day commemorates the occasion over 2,000 years ago when Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka of India, converted King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism. For Buddhists, this hallowed day of Poson is second only to Vesak in terms of importance
The Acting High Commissioner and staff of the Sri Lanka High Commission, Singapore together with the Dhamma Gavashi Youth Group and Sri Lankan Expatriates in Singapore organized a Poson Dhamma Sermon and Buddha Puja on 03rd June 2015 at the Official Residence of the High Commissioner from 7.30 pm onwards.
The Dhamma Sermon was delivered by Rev. Dr. Omalpe Sobitha Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of the Bodhiraja Viharaya in Singapore. A group of children of the Sri Lankan expatriates escorted the Venerabale Maha Sanga with drummers. A large number of Sri Lankans living in Singapore along with staff of the High Commission participated.
Rev. Dr. Omalpe Sobitha Nayaka Thero stated that it was after a long time that a Dhamma sermon was arranged by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore and the Ven. Nayaka Thero blessed the Members of Staff of the mission to continue to arrange many more Dhamma Sermon in future.
A “Bakthi Geetha” programme was also held at the Official Residence of the High Commissioner soon after the Dhamma Sermon. Sri Lankan Migrant Workers and children of the Sri Lankan expatriates sang Bakthi Geetha which made the Poson celebration more colourful.
Mrs Badrani Tiranagama, Mrs Bushana Amarasekara and Mr Indika Danthanarayana assisted to organize the Bakthi Geetha and trained the drummers and their genuine efforts helped to make this event a success.
