The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore in collaboration with the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) and the Jewellery Design and Management International School( JDMIS) of Singapore organized a webinar on 02nd November 2023, focusing on fostering business collaboration between Sri Lankan and Singapore business merchants. The webinar aimed to build stronger ties between businesses in the two countries and address existing challenges. The webinar was attended by over 50 participants.
Delivering his opening remarks, Mr. Ahamed Razee, the Acting High Commissioner provided an insightful overview of the trade relations in the gem and jewellery industry between Sri Lanka and Singapore. He underscored the significance of the Singapore market for Sri Lankan gem exporters.
Mrs. Tanja Sadow, the Dean of JDMIS, shared her extensive four-decade experience in working with gem and jewellery professionals from Sri Lanka. Ms. Sadow highlighted that she visited Sri Lanka several times and witnessed the exceptional quality of gems and the ethical practices employed in gem mining in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Janaka Udaya Kumara, the Director General of NGJA, discussed the historical significance of Sri Lanka as a gem-producing nation and the ethical mining practices that are inherent in the country’s gem industry. Further, elaborated on the NGJA’s efforts to promote Sri Lanka’s gem business, including the construction of the gem tower in Ratnapura. He extended an invitation to Singaporean gem business merchants to lease office spaces in the tower and attend the FACET exhibition in Sri Lanka to be held in January 2024.
The webinar featured an informative presentation delivered by Ms. Ayoma Dias, Assistant Director of Export Services and Export Marketing at NGJA covering a wide range of topics, including NGJA’s regulatory framework, export facilitation, trade exhibitions, and potential collaboration opportunities between the two countries.
The event concluded with a productive Q&A session and provided an excellent opportunity for the participants to engage with the panel members, who promptly addressed their inquiries and provided valuable insights.
