Sri Lanka is a nation with a rich array of religious and cultural festivities and activities representing its diverse multi-cultural tapestry. Among them is a pageant named Esala Perahera / Dalada Perahera or the festival of the Tooth Relic, which is one of the grandest of all traditional festivities considered as the epitome of the country’s Buddhist celebrations. The Esela Perehera takes place every year in the hill capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy.
A unique combination of cultural display and religious piety, the procession consists of various types of dances, rituals and displays. Elephants adorned with lavish garments walk in this pageant. The highlight of this procession is the display of the casket that enshrines the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha placed on a majestic tusker.
This year’s Kandy Esala Perahera will be starting today (13th August) and the final Randoli Perahera will take to the streets on Nikini Full Moon Poya Day which is on the night of August 22nd. Due to the COVID 19 related safety measures, this year’s pageant will be held under bio-bubble without the participation of spectators.
