In collaboration with Hilton Singapore, the Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore hosted a Sri Lankan food promotion from January 31st through February 2nd, 2013. The Checkers Restaurant at Hilton Singapore attracted a large Sri Lankan community, Singaporeans and others living in Singapore. Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Singapore, Her Excellency Mrs Ferial Ashraff hosted a few dignitaries to the food promotion, including the Governor of the Central Bank Mr Nivard Cabral, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Mr Dubaniowski, Singapore's ranking diplomat Ambassador K. Kesavapany, Singapore’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Karan Singh Thakral and Mr Primus Cheng, CEO of Prima Ltd.
To welcome the guests, the entrance to the Checkers was decorated with the Sri Lankan Sesath. The Sri Lankan Chefs flown in for the promotion through the sponsorship of the Sri Lankan Airlines treated diners to the unique sounds and aroma of the kottu roti station and the hoppers station. The food was artfully displayed and the buffet received wide ranging praise. Sri Lankan cuisine is international renowned for its unique flavours. With a recorded history of 2500 years, Sri Lankan chefs maintain an age old tradition of preparing food using spices distinct from its neighbour India. A rich diversity of cooking styles and techniques inherited from the ancient to the colonial period entertained a range of visitors. In addition to the main dishes sweets, short eats and beverages unique to Sri Lanka were served. The Sri Lankan food promotion received raving reviews and was appreciated by hundreds of visitors.
